Chilla Vista is a biannual music and arts festival held in Isla Vista celebrating local culture while promoting environmental sustainability. In 2009, the stages on which the bands performed were solar and biodiesel-powered. The all-day event, which started in 2004, takes place in Anisq' Oyo' and Peoples' Park in Isla Vista and typically features local music, farmer’s markets, interactive art, and sustainability campaigns. According to Jon Kalan, the Chilla Vista President in 2009, “In a nutshell, Chilla Vista reflects on the positive attributes of Isla Vista. With all the hype that comes along with Halloween and Floatopia, we strive to give back to the local community, to the environment and related issues, support student groups and the art and culture of Isla Vista.”
