Barbary Coast was a student run carnival started in the 1930s. Sororities, fraternities, and dorms built booths and tents around the year’s theme and performed a variety of acts. Typically held in the spring, Barbary Coast was a chance for students to relax, drink beer, and showcase their talents. The event included weeks of planning, days of constructing, and spanned over one weekend. After the carnival became too wild to control in 1959, the student government decided to put an end to the Coast.
